Dr Yohanna is currently on secondment to Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) for 3 months. Here following his impressions on the experience:

I am a medical officer in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital (SPIYMH), Kafanchan, Nigeria. In 2018 I was seconded to the Sickle Cell Department where I engaged in daily consultations for Sickle Cell children, adults and pregnant Sickle Cell women.

My key ARISE objective is to have a better approach on New Born Screening (NBS) in SPIYMH and to be conversant with standard management of Sickle Cell Anaemia in pregnancy, labour and post-partum.

During my secondment at GSTT I plan to develop a feasible NBS pathway for SPIYMH by observing and shadowing various Sickle Cell professionals. This will help improve the diagnosis and treatment of our patients back home.

My hope is to help with the sustainability of the ARISE project objectives in Kaduna state and eventually in the entire country.
