The Consortium for Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA), with support from the Bristol Myers Squibb Education Grant, the Sickle Cell Cohort Research (SCORE) Foundation, and the Department of Hematology at Kaduna State University, recently conducted a 2-day Train the Trainer (TOT) workshop from Thursday, 7th to Friday, 8th March 2024.

This workshop was designed for primary healthcare workers, including nurses, midwives, community health workers, and select doctors, in activated primary healthcare facilities across Kaduna state.

The focus of the workshop was on training participants in newborn screening for sickle cell disease, with an emphasis on sample collection, data management, and the primary healthcare-level management of sickle cell cases.

The trained individuals are expected to step down this knowledge by conducting further training sessions in their respective healthcare facilities. This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals at the grassroots level in addressing sickle cell disease through effective screening and management practices.
